See Needs, Meet Needs: The Power of Mutual Service

At Come and See Consulting, our philosophy isn’t just something we talk about in boardrooms or coaching sessions. It’s built on the foundation of how we live every single day right here at home.

In our family, we live by a simple, four-word dynamic: “See needs, meet needs.”

It sounds straightforward, but in a household of 14, putting it into practice creates a powerful culture shift. We remind our children (and each other) that there is no room for #1 when you live in community with each other. We need to step out of our own worlds and actively look for ways to serve the 13 other people around us. And when we do that, something incredible happens to the flow of everyday life.

Instead of carrying our own burdens alone, we suddenly have 13 other people looking for ways to serve us. How amazing is that?! Let me say that again: when you consistently look around to “see needs, meet needs,” you have 13 other people consistently looking around for ways to serve YOU.

Beyond the Household: A Culture of Mutual Care

When everyone is focused solely on getting their own needs met, friction and burnout are inevitable. But when a group of people, whether a family, a business team, or a community, collectively shifts their mindset outward, everything changes:

  • Awareness Replaces Distraction: Training yourself to "see needs" forces you to slow down, observe others, and cultivate empathy.

  • Action Replaces Procrastination: "Meeting needs" builds a bias toward action. Small acts of service—picking up what’s dropped, anticipating a job that needs doing, offering an encouraging word—keep the momentum going.

  • Abundance Replaces Scarcity: Knowing that an entire team or family has your back frees you from the stress of self-preservation.

Living It Out Today

Servant leadership starts with vision. It’s about noticing what others miss and taking initiative without waiting to be asked. When we look out for one another, nobody gets left behind. Whether you’re managing a business team, guiding a ministry, or gathering around your family dinner table, ask yourself today: What is one need I can see and meet right now?
